Fashion On TV: Minx (2022-2023)

A friend told me about a show called “Minx” on HBO Max. Then another friend told me about it. Dual recommendations mean I need to watch it, right? Well, not long into the second episode, as the tacky porn people are descending the stairs at the main character, Joyce’s country club, I declared out loud “This show is DELIGHTFUL!”

From my discovery of the show to the writing of this blog post, it was canceled on Max (lame), was picked up by Starz, then canceled again after its second season (SUPER LAME STARZ).

The show follows Joyce Pritchard (Ophelia Lovibond) as she attempts to bring to life a feminist magazine. She meets nudie magazine purveyor Doug Renetti (Jake Johnson) who agrees to publish her magazine with the caveat that the magazine features a nude male centerfold. Minx is born and hilarity ensues.

From, the gay photographer who dreams of a legitimate career, to Joyce’s sister who has an awaking of her own, every character is fully fleshed out and loveable in their own quirky way.

To the clothes: the show is set in 1972-73, so everything is polyester magnificence. Doug wears leisure suits always, and platform shoes, for special occasions. During the second season when the magazine becomes successful, he treats himself to a gigantic fur coat. Joyce primarily wears a two-piece lady pantsuit with a pussy bow blouse as the resident uber-feminist.

Bambi (Jessica Lowe), the former centerfold who eschews her former life to make something of herself, dresses provocatively, despite her desire to grow as a person, and despite her innocence and naivete. Tina (Idara Victor), Doug’s long-put-upon assistant who also dreams of bigger and better things, has the most amazing wardrobe of 70s polyester dresses with bright colors and fun patterns, topped off with fabulous jewelry.

If you like seventies fashion, enjoy a good story with a lot of laughs, and don’t mind a little (OK, a LOT) of full frontal, then I heartily suggest you check out Minx. Then if we can start a campaign to bring it back for at least one more season…
