That 1920s Man
While women saw very dramatic changes in their fashion in the 1920s, men’s clothing changed very little from men’s fashion of the Victorian age.
A typical outfit would consist of an argyle sweater vest over a button-front shirt, with a bowtie or necktie and “Oxford Bags” which were very wide-legged, super-baggy pants. But, unlike the super baggy pants that are popular today (and don’t seem to ever go away), Oxford Bags did NOT show off your under-drawers. They actually FIT around the waist...
Suit vests were also typically worn, usually with a pocket watch and watch chain. “Paper” collars were still common. We have some in the store somewhere – but they are like a 14 ½ collar; which is not usually big enough for the 21st century man.
“Raccoon” coats were popular – probably actually made of raccoon; it was basically an enormous fur coat. Another classic ensemble would be a broken-up suit, such as white pants with a navy blazer. Double breasted jackets on suits were also popular. “Porkpie” hats were in style - a small hat with an upturned brim in front. Straw boaters were also in vogue for the warmer months. Sport coats had wider lapels that were notched. A 1970s tuxedo jacket could absolutely stand-in for your 1920s style!
Of course, gangsters and racketeers were flashier in their dress than your average man. Pinstripe suits and fedoras were their uniform of choice.
The first screen idol - Rudolph Valentino - influenced men’s fashion. His slicked down “patent leather” hairstyle and clean-shaven look was widely imitated. He also popularized the wearing of wristwatches. And he was SO handsome!!
If you wish men would go back to dressing this way, raise your hand!!
